Billable hours are your real capacity
Your technicians are your biggest investment, and every hour they spend driving, waiting or hunting for information is an hour you pay for but can’t bill. Improving technician productivity is often cheaper and faster than hiring, and it makes your best people happier too.
1. Schedule by skill and location
Not every tech is right for every job. Match job types to the technicians who handle them best, and cluster jobs geographically so routes make sense. A good scheduling board shows availability, skills and job locations at a glance.
2. Cut drive time
Drive time is the biggest productivity leak in most home service companies. Group jobs by area, avoid sending techs back and forth across town, and use live tech tracking so dispatch can send the closest available technician to urgent calls.
3. Send complete job information before they arrive
Technicians lose time when they show up without the full picture. Before every job, they should have:
- The customer’s name, address, access notes and contact details
- The reason for the call and any photos the customer shared
- Equipment details and past service history
- Any parts likely needed for the job
When that lives in a mobile app instead of a dispatcher’s notes, techs arrive prepared and fix it on the first visit more often.
4. Let techs finish the job in the field
Every task that requires a trip back to the office or a call to dispatch slows the day down. Give techs the tools to quote, collect signatures, create invoices and take payments on site. The job is closed when they leave the driveway, not days later.
5. Standardize your most common jobs
Checklists and a shared price book make your top ten job types repeatable. New techs ramp up faster, quality is more consistent, and pricing stays the same no matter who’s on the call.
6. Reduce callbacks
A callback costs you a second truck roll with no new revenue. Track callbacks by technician and job type, review them weekly, and use what you learn to tighten checklists and coaching.
7. Measure and reward what matters
Track a few simple numbers for each technician: jobs completed per day, average ticket, close rate on estimates and callback rate. Share them openly and reward improvement. Most techs want to do great work, and clear goals help them see what great looks like. Use reporting so the numbers are always current.
The bottom line
Productive technicians aren’t working harder. They’re spending less time on everything that isn’t the job. Smarter scheduling, less driving, complete information and mobile tools add up to more billable work every day. Amplafide brings scheduling, dispatching, tech tracking and mobile invoicing together so your team can spend their day doing what they do best.
